The month of April is designated as
Sexual
Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness
about sexual violence (focusing on sexual assault and rape) and to provide
education for individuals and communities.
Here on our site, you will find a continually unfolding schedule of events and
information about Juneau's SAAM campaign.
If you would like to learn more or to participate in any of the events please
call Swarupa or
Nicolle at 586-6623.
We will post more ways to participate in Sexual Assault Awareness Month as the
month draws closer.
By working together as a community, we can highlight sexual violence as a major
public health issue and reinforce the need for comprehensive intervention and prevention efforts.
"March Forward - Alaskans Choose
Respect"
On March 31 @ noon, Governor Sean Parnell will lead a
march from the steps of the Capitol to raise awareness for
Alaskans Choose Respect,
a statewide effort to end the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Please join us!
Healing Art: Surviving Violence
Art Project
AWARE is partnering with the
Canvas in "Evenings of Healing Art;
Surviving Violence". We invite people to the Canvas (223 Seward St.) to hear about artists who have used art as therapy to heal themselves of trauma from violence/assault.
We will review a few of the artists works and then enter the artistic process
for ourselves.
We are providing the materials for artists and "artists" to come together for the next two
Fridays, March 12th and 19th from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm to create art. This is
for everyone! Art need not be professional or "beautiful", but an expression of the
healing and transformative capacity of expression through art.
This art may then be used for the exhibit at the Heritage Coffee for the month of
April (See below).
Healing Art: Surviving Violence Art
Exhibit

Sexual assault and abuse is a powerful act that changes
the life of the victim in deep and complex ways. Healing this unspeakable wound
often requires the speakable medicine of color, creativity, self exploration and
expression in the process of art.
AWARE is launching Sexual Assault Awareness Month with
an art exhibit, Healing Art: Surviving Violence.
We hope to see you there!
