Education and Support Groups

AWARE has a variety of groups for women and children.  For each of our groups:

  • All services are free of charge and confidential.

  • Unless otherwise noted, women and children from the community are welcome to attend.

  • Childcare is provided. Please call ahead t o 586-6623 if you are bringing children.

  • Transportation to and from the group may be available. Please call ahead to 586-6623 if you need transportation.


Groups at AWARE Include:

Women's Education Groups

AWARE's offers Women's Education Groups every Tuesday night from 6pm to 7:30pm.  Presentation topics vary monthly.  Rotating topics include: domestic violence, sexual assault, chemical dependency, family dynamics, and self-care. 

On the last Tuesday of each month, AWARE collaborates with Alaska Legal Services and offers an educational legal clinic for women.  This is an informational clinic on divorce, dissolution and child custody.  Attorneys will be available to go over legal processes and to answer questions.  If in need of childcare, please call Meghan in advance at AWARE 586-6623.  Contact Michael or Ellen at AWARE for more information and/or questions at 586-6623. 


  
Women's Support Groups

Our Women's Art Support group is offered every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This specialized group follows the A Window Between Worlds curriculum and provides women with the opportunity to experience a supportive art workshop.  Women are encouraged to come, share supportive space and process of their own terms.  Participation is voluntary!  This support group also helps women connect with each other, process experiences, and explore skills to design healthy living patterns.  Visit A Window Between Worlds website www.awbw.org.

Children's Life Skills Groups

The children's life skills groups are for children 5 and up.  They are Tuesdays from 6pm to 7:30 pm.  Groups include fun discussions, games and activities centered around different topics.  Topics include:    
  • Personal Boundaries 
  • Families and Change  
  • Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution
  • Self Esteem    
  • Naming and Expressing Feelings
  • Keeping it Safe at Home    
  • Chemical Use and Abuse
Children's Creative Play Groups

AWARE's Children's creative play groups are for children age 5 and up.  They are held from 6pm to 7:30pm on Wednesdays.  Groups include a variety of fun outings, movies, music, and games.

Healthy Relationships Class for Women

AWARE advocates periodically facilitate a 10-week healthy relationships class for women. The goals for this class are to:
  • Explore and examine the elements of a healthy relationship.
  • Develop techniques for boundary setting, assertiveness, realistic goal setting, and decision making.
  • Increase understanding of abuse, abusive family dynamics, dysfunctional family patterns, feelings, with an emphasis on anger, fear and anxiety, guilt and grief.
  • Receive support and encouragement while growing in self-knowledge and self-esteem, and in changing negative lifelong patterns.

Parenting Group for Mothers

AWARE's Parenting Group meets on Thursdays from 12pm-1pm at AWARE and is designed for women interested in learning about the effects of violence on children, positive parenting techniques and more!  This group is led by our master's level children's counselor and is now available for current AWARE residents and interested women from the community.  Childcare is available if arranged in advance with Meghan at AWARE 586-6623.
